Meeting notes of the joint TNP meeting on JEWELS at Northern College (Barnsley, UK) , September 29 - October 1, 2000

1. General

The meeting evaluated current work on the dissemination effort.  The JEWELS pages implemented until now by VDIVDE, in cooperation with ELSNET, were reviewed.  Adjustments were proposed and outputs were finalized.  Action plans were made.  Future goals were discussed.

2. Reports from the working groups

Materials which were output at this meeting have been collected in the following archive: ftp://ftp.let.uu.nl/pub/socrates/jewels-northerncollege.zip

WG4: RECOMMENDATIONS & POLICY DOCUMENTS

(member list, tasks) Publication of existing documents and creation of  new policy documents aimed at decision makers, including:
  1. Collected recommendations;
  2. Phonetics main page;
  3. Linguistics curriculum page;
  4. Student awareness plan;

WG5: PROMOTION AND FACILITIES

Creation of webpages that promote the disciplines in language and speech (and the JEWELS site)

3. Action list

The following action items need to be distinguished in the finalization of the working groups' outputs:

(1) Structural implementations that concern VDIVDE-IT should be sent before October 5 to:
Gerrit.Bloothooft@let.uu.nl, desmedt@uib.no, Klaedtke@vdivde-it.de.  All structural changes as proposed by working groups should be realised by VDIVDE-IT by October 19.

(2) Textual output should be handled by section editors. Please take care that all documents have an author name in it. The editors are: Gerrit Bloothooft (editor in chief), Andy Way (recommendations), and Eva Wigforss (general / promotion).  Editors will add the texts to the JEWELS site by 31 October. In case of problems this could be restricted to level 1 only (further levels down externally).

(3) All textual changes to the database sections on Institutions&Courses and Materials&Tools will be handled through VDIVDE-IT, because of the interference with the databases. Send these proposals to: Gerrit Bloothooft (for institutions&courses) or Koenraad deSmedt (materials&tools) who will forward it to VDIVDE-IT.

The web-interface for the Staps system had too many bugs to be used at NC. These bugs will be repaired by VDIVDE-IT before October 5.  VDIVDE-IT will produce instructions for editors, also by October 5. A template that does NOT affect the sliding menu tree should become available.

An action for translation of important pages will be organised as soon as the pages in English are available on the web.

4. Successor TNP

It was discussed which kinds of new topics would be suitable in an application for a new TNP project on Speech and Language: Old phasing might be useful again: Analysis - Proposals - Recommendations.  The information at the Commission's Socrates TNP web site should be read carefully.
