Report from Working Group 3

TNP meeting at Northern College, Sep. 29-Oct. 1, 2000

The working group recommends the following changes with respect to the current state of the database and the proposals from the meeting in Berlin, Aug. 31.

Submission and modification access

Largely as agreed at the Berlin meeting.  An editor is appointed, who has a supervising task.  The editor is automatically notified of new submissions, which are made accessible to the general public only after acceptance by the editor.  The editor must check with the author if different from the submitting person.  The editor therefore needs a way to make submitted but not yet accepted entries visible to the author, but not to the general public.  Modifications of earlier submissions are handled by a versioning system.

Comments

As agreed in Berlin, anyone can submit comments, which are immediately made accessible.  Comments are also automatically mailed to the editor, who can remove comments if needed

Fields in the entry form

The proposed fields are in general still the ones in the current form in Bergen, with the following changes:

Name: should be "Item name"

Medium: CD-ROM/DVD-ROM, Printed material, video tape, audio tape, Internet

After URL, new fields "Year of publication" and "Version or edition" must be inserted (optional)

Author: change to "Author/Editor".  One of "Name" and "Institution" is required, but they are not both required.

The author's email in the submission form is not presented in the displayed information, but is only visible to the editor (and to any person submitting a modification).

Type: new choice "Handbook/reference" will be included.  Change "none of the above" to "other" and request input for this choice.

Other subjects: renamed to "Other disciplines":

Content: renamed to "Topics (choose one or more keywords)".

Topics gives a popup window with at least the following non-exclusive choices: speech synthesis, speech recognition, speech disorders, hearing disorders, dialect, speech production, phonology, acoustics, articulation, parsing, grammars, morphology, NL generation, lexicon, speech analysis, speech coding, voice, statistical methods, machine translation, dialogue, tagging, disambiguation, semantics, pragmatics, multimodality, multilinguality, first language acquisition, second language acquisition, ear training and transcription, automata, information retrieval, applications, neural networks, machine learning of natural language, character encoding, terminology, corpora, bilingualism, prosody.

Other keywords: renamed to "Other topics (a new line for each)".

Languages: cover at leasta all major official languages of the European Union,  leave out Georgian, Estonian.

Languages that are the object of study: include Arabic, Akan and Swahili.

"(click none if not language specific)" must be "(leave open if not language specific)"

Main features with respect to pedagogicy: add the following choices: sound samples, interactive listening test, on-line exercises, on-line interactive demo, instructor feedback, glossary, annotated bibliography/further reading.  This field is optional, so (choose one or more keywords)* should be deleted.

Audience will be changed to "Level" with the following choices: introductory, intermediate, advanced (non-exclusive, obligatory field).

Description and special features: delete the example.

Shortcomings and caveats: change to "Limitations and caveats".

Availability: changed to "Free of charge?" with choices Yes and No.

Associated materials: delete (ref. to other database entries).

NB. in XML code, <content> field has some inappropriate keywords, maybe due to errors in script?

Instructions for submitting new entries

There should be help in small popup windows when the mouse is over the field name.

The page for submitting new entries should contain the following instructions:

If you want to submit a new entry, please check if an entry for the item is already present.  If so, you may provide comments or modify an entry rather than submitting a new entry.  These possibilities are provided when viewing a particular entry.

Most fields contain keywords which will be used for search, while the description is a running text that provides the most important information to persons viewing the item.  The fields marked with * are obligatory.  Help is provided by small windows that pop up when the mouse is moved over the field name.

After completing your submission, you can still modify it during the same session.  Afterwards, modifications will be considered as a new version of an entry.  All submissions will be up for approval by the editor.  The editor is *name*.

Presentation of pages

It is agreed that the first view of an item presented to the user contains just core information plus buttons for accessing extra information.

Core information:

Item name (with hyperlink to URL), medium, description, type, subject field, topic keywords

Further details:

Main ped. features, level, languages, platform, free of charge, limitations, illustration, assoc. materials

Author and publisher

Author name, institution

Reviewer

Reviewer name (with hyperlink to email), affiliation

Multilinguality

A term list is being made with translations in different languages.  The objective is that these terms can later be used to search in a multilingual mode.
