LOB CORPUS: LIST OF TEXT SAMPLES

The following list contains for each text (1) bibliographical information, (2) line references to the computer version, and (3) information on the number of words in the sample. There are also occasional notes on special features of the texts.

Typographical Errors

All typographical errors which have been corrected (cf. p. 32 in the Manual) are indicated under the relevant text as follows:

Corr 151 theatre [thetre]

This means that, in line 151 of the text, theatre has been inserted instead of thetre, which occurred in the original. All occurrences of a sic tag (cf. p. 33 in the Manual) are listed as follows:

Sic 68 dealing were [concord]

The information within square brackets draws attention to the special feature singled out by the tag.

A Note on Copyright

Most of the texts from which the samples were taken are under copyright. In all cases where the copyright of an extract could be traced, permission was sought to include the extract (under the terms stated on p. 2 in the Manual) in the corpus free of charge. In the few instances where the copyright holder withheld permission on those terms, alternative extracts were sampled. Relevant details of copyright are included in the following list. Note, however, that our letter to copyright holders gave them the option of not replying, in the knowledge that this would be taken as an indication of their agreement to the use of an extract in the corpus. Where the copyright holder has indicated his consent in this way, we have not added any details about permission in the list of references.
