Surely a large part of the answer to Martin's point is that on a
discussion list like this one, we are writing brief off-the-cuff
responses and it is easy to say something about British v. American
English on an anecdotal basis whereas saying something solidly corpus-
based would take time-consuming research? That doesn't mean that we
wouldn't gladly do that research, if we chose to take it on as a
project, but one can't do that sort of thing every time one responds to
a point on a discussion list.
