Introductory Note

SOURCE TEXTS

1. OLD ENGLISH

2. MIDDLE ENGLISH

3. EARLY MODERN ENGLISH

Introductory Note

This list of the source texts aims at offering quick access to the full bibliographical references of the extracts included in the Corpus. In order to facilitate locating the texts from each main period, the material is arranged in three sections: Old English, Middle English and Early Modern English. Each section lists the source texts in alphabetical order, according to a key word or string of key words printed in bold face. Cross references are given to help locate less obvious entries.

Note the following principles of compilation:
- articles have been excluded when entering the titles in alphabetical order.
- in most cases key words are based on authors' names and/or the key words drawn from the title of the text. When the title of the text is not obvious from the title of the volume, an explanatory title has been added, introduced by the word `TEXT'. The relevant words for alphabetization appear in bold face.
- as the entries below are, by and large, identical to those given on the top of the 242 text files, umlaut and other non-ASCII characters appear as the closest (compoundcharacters, e.g. BUELBRING = `Bülbring', AELFRIC = `Ælfric'; MEIDHAD = `Meið had' etc; the letters used are in upper case throughout.

- page and line numbers:

- the abbreviations P. and PP. generally introduce the page (or folio) number(s), column number (when more than one column occurs), line numbers and a possible item number given in the source text.
- the abbreviations L. and LL. stand for `lines' for volumes which have no page numbers.
- when confusion might arise, volume numbers have been added.
- when counting the line numbers, those given in the source text have been followed (the headings have been included in the counts when the editor has ascribed numbers to them in the source text); when no line numbers occur in the source text, each new line on the page has been counted as one.
- for background information and to help locate extracts of source texts in the larger units, the abbreviated title, the sub-period represented, and the file name and possible sample number(s) are given for each entry on the right-hand side of the page (for definitions, see Section 3.3.4. (2), pp. 45B47, and (23) and (24), pp. 55-56; see, also, Section 5, p. 61 ff.):
