Another possibility would be to use R (<http://www.r-project.org>). R has Perl-compatible regular expressions, is overall much easier to learn than Perl or Python, and comes with all tools for statistical and graphical analysis a corpus linguist might ever want to perform. I used it in classes before and will teach a course at the LSA Linguistic Institute in Stanford this summer; cf. <http://www.linguistics.ucsb.edu/faculty/stgries/teaching/lsa-linginst_2007.html>.
