    University of Brighton

Research Fellow in Natural Language Processing

Salary (British Pounds): 28,290 to 33,799

The Natural Language Technology Group (NLTG) at the University of Brighton
is seeking a research fellow to work on the Prodigy (Probabilistic Deep
Generation) project, a new 3-year EPSRC-funded project led by Dr Anja
Belz. The aim of Prodigy is to develop a comprehensive, linguistically
informed, probabilistic methodology for generating language. Drawing also
on the expertise of the two affiliated project members, Dr Ehud Reiter
(Aberdeen) and Dr Khalid Choukri (ELRA/ELDA), Prodigy will focus on
developing technology in two key areas: (i) domain-independent linguistic
representation, in particular content representation; and (ii)
    probabilistic decision-making.

We are seeking a highly motivated and committed researcher to work on all
aspects of the Prodigy Project, but in particular on developing a content
representation formalism suitable for encoding the inputs to a type of
computational natural language generation (NLG) often called data-to-text
NLG. Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant area of computational
linguistics or a closely related field. Proficiency in at least one
programming language commonly used in Natural Language Processing (e.g.
Python, Java, Perl, C/C++, Prolog) is essential. Candidates must also
have good knowledge and understanding of at least one of NLG, discourse
analysis and semantic and/or discourse representation for computational
processing of language. Applicants should demonstrate enthusiasm for
independent research and commitment to developing their research career.

The post is fixed-term for 33 months due to funding. Starting date is
01/04/2007 or as soon as possible thereafter. Job sharers welcome. For
an informal discussion please contact Dr Anja Belz (email:
    A.S.Belz@brighton.ac.uk).
