Some journals and books require or at least prefer
submissions in LaTeX. The latest version of OpenOffice
now supports direct export to LaTeX:

        http://www.openoffice.org/

I used that feature to generate LaTex from HTML for
a chapter of a book that is being formatted in LaTeX.
The editor said that the LaTeX required only "minor
tweaks" to adapt it to the book style.

I've been using OpenOffice for many years to generate
PDF and to translate to and from MS Office formats.
    It has been very robust.
