You don't have to be envious. Unless you're living
in an asylum for the insane, your daily life is
based on multitudinous acts of faith.

Every time you drive a car (or ride with someone
else who is driving), you bet your life on your
faith that other drivers are going to stay on their
side of the road.
Whenever you fly in a plane, you place your faith
in the current theories of physics, the methods
of engineering, and numerous people, including the
pilot, the mechanics, the air-traffic controllers,
and your fellow passengers.
All human societies are built on faith in the
behavior of their members. In fact, most mammals
have a great deal of faith in their fellow animals
who nurture them. Cows, pigs, and chickens believe
that the nice humans who have taken care of them all
their lives will continue to do so forever.
For the most part, that faith was well placed -- cows,
pigs, chickens, and humans are not endangered species.
