    The School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh, is seeking a
    research programmer to develop tools for building tutorial dialogue systems.

    Your programming tasks will include the design and implementation of
    graphical user interfaces to support development of linguistic resources
    (e.g., grammars and lexicons), tools for corpus analysis, and graphical user
    interfaces for intelligent tutoring systems.

    Ideally you will have strong programming experience, a BSc in
    computer science, artificial intelligence or computational
    linguistics, with experience in Java, and user interface
    design. Knowledge of perl, experience with XML processing and/or
    natural language processing techniques are desirable but not required.

    The appointment has an initial fixed duration of 1 year, with
    opportunities for continuation, and is expected to start mid-July
    2006, or shortly thereafter. It is anticipated that interviews will be
    held on the week beginning 17 July.

    Salary Scale: AD1/2 depending on experience and qualifications

    General Information
    -------------------

    The School of Informatics is part of the College of Science and
    Engineering. The post will be based at HCRC, 2 Buccleuch Place within
    the central University area.

    Principal Duties:
    -----------------
    The research programmer will be responsible for:

    Implementing user interfaces designed by researchers;

    Developing tools to extract lexical information from existing lexical
    databases

    Developing tools to analyse corpus data using Java and XML processing tools.

    Candidate Profile
    ------------------

    The successful candidate will have the following profile:

    Completed BSc or MSc in computer science or artificial intelligence;

    Ability to work effectively and to meet deadlines;

    Strong programming skills in Java;

    Experience building graphical user interfaces.

    In addition the following skills are desirable:

    Experience in writing modules for large software systems

    Knowledge of XML processing techniques in Perl;

    Knowledge of Lisp, or natural language processing
    techniques, will be an advantage.

    Project Description
    -------------------

    The project will be based at The Human Communication Research Centre
    (HCRC). The ongoing work of the tutorial systems group is on
    developing robust and extensible tutorial dialogue systems. The goal
    of this project is to develop tools for lexicon building and parser
