The appointee will work on a project funded by the Capital Markets Cooperative Research Centre on the application of language technologies to company announcements, and will contribute to the development of the general framework and the design, implementation and integration of various parts of the project, which includes text categorization, named entity recognition, information extraction and text summarization. Applicants should indicate the level at which they are applying or whether they wish to be considered at both levels.
Essential Selection Criteria for Level A: PhD ( or submitted) in Computer Science or Mathematics or a related area or equivalent; strong background in an area related to language technology, natural language processing or computational linguistics; good programming skills; ability to present research results at scientific meetings and to publish in the scientific literature; good written and interpersonal communication skills.
Additional Essential Selection Criteria for Level B: PhD in a relevant area; at least three years postdoctoral research experience or equivalent in the areas of language technology, natural language processing or computational linguistics; established publication record.

The position is available on a full-time (fixed-term) basis for a period of one year, with the possibility of further appointment subject to funding and satisfactory performance. Probationary conditions may apply.
Selection criteria must be addressed in the application.
Package (Level A): From $49,466 pa, including base salary $44,830 to $60,634 pa, annual leave loading and 9% employer's superannuation. An appointee with a PhD will be appointed to a minimum of Point 6 on the salary scale, currently $56,525 pa.
Package (Level B): From $70,395 pa, including base salary $63,797 to $75,650 pa, annual leave loading and 9% employer's superannuation.
The appointment is currently governed by the terms of the Macquarie University Enterprise Agreement 2003-2006. The successful applicant will subsequently be offered the choice of an Australian Workplace Agreement for this appointment.
