    PhD studentships in Portuguese NLP

The NLX-Natural Language Group at the University of Lisbon has
various positions to work on the following topics: corpus and
treebanking, ontologies, shallow and deep linguistic processing.
This work is carried on in view of areas such as e-learning
environments, the semantic web, question-answering or machine
    translation.

The PhD studentships are for 1 year in first instance, renewable
for up to 3 years in total. Positions start on 1st December 2005
(or a.s.a.p.), and provide an annual maintenance grant in a range
starting from euro 12,780 (tax free, social security and 24h
insurance included). The positions are available to both EU- and
non-EU-applicants. They all require residence in Lisbon, 35 hours/week
research, and the stipend must result in a PhD dissertation.

Our ideal candidates have a strong background in (one or more of)
natural language processing, artificial intelligence, computational
linguistics, cognitive science, or a related field. Good programming
skills and experience are a strong asset. Native or near-native
competence in Portuguese is crucial. Good communication skills in
English (written and oral) are important. Applicants should have
a keen interest in problem solving and NLP and a capacity to conduct
individual and collaborative research consonant with the projects
    underway at NLX-Group.

The successful applicants will work in a team involved in research
activities being carried on in the scope of a number of national and
international projects, involving close collaboration with other
departments and numerous other Portuguese and international academic
institutions. For more information on the current activities of the
