    Description of the position

    The Computational Linguistics group at the University of Tuebingen has
    an opening for a doctoral student in a collaborative research project
    with the Alfa-informatica Department (Prof. John Nerbonne) at the
    University of Groningen and with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences,
    Sofia (Kiril Simov). The project is funded by the Volkswagen-Stiftung.
      The focus of the project is to apply computational methods to a rich
    set of dialectal data from all regions of Bulgaria. The goal is to
    investigate the applicability of dialectometric techniques in order to
    measure the degree of diversity in Bulgarian dialects.

    Programming experience and knowledge of finite-state automata or
    statistical methods are essential. Knowledge of Bulgarian and previous
    experience in the areas of dialectology and phonology is a plus.

    The advertised position will provide the opportunity of working toward
    a Ph.D. degree in computational linguistics at the University of
    Tuebingen. An M.A. degree (or equivalent) in computational
    linguistics, linguistics or related fields is required.

    The project will start as soon as possible. The position will provide
    funding for three years (36 months) and should begin as soon as
    possible, but no later than Jan. 1, 2006. The successful applicant
    will receive a contract for one year extendible for two further years
    subject to evaluation after the first year. The salary is determined
    by the German civil servants payscale (Verguetungsgruppe BAT IIa/2)
    and amounts to approximately 28.000 Euro per year. The exact salary
    amount varies depending on age and marital status.
