    Ted,

    It seems that what you need is a QDA software (Qualitative Data
    Analysis). I wrote such a software (QDA Miner) but it is a commercial
    one. See:

    The free trial version can handle thousands of documents but allow
    classification of only the first 25. Most QDA software will allow you to
    assign one or multiple codes to whole units of text or only selected
    segments. They will also allow text retrieval, searching, comparison, based
    on the codes assigned manually.

    There are several other QDA software available on the market including some
    freeware. You can read a comparative review of the most popular ones and
