another approach which may be of interest is that of Hatayama et
al. who parsed sentences with a dependency parser and then basically
lost all adjuncts:

Their approach was originally designed for creating headlines.
Dictionary definition sentences are comparatively easy to parse, as there
is not as much variation as most other genres. However, simple
heuristics would almost certainly get you most of what you want
faster.
