2nd call for papers:

BAAL/CUP Applied Linguistics Seminar Programme 1999

‘Investigating discourse practices through corpus research: methods,
findings and applications’

Date: 22nd May 1999
Place: Centre for Applied Language Studies, The University of Reading

The aim of the seminar is to provide corpus researchers the opportunity
to report on and discuss their investigations of the discourse practices
of varied discourse communities through the analysis of corpus data. We
will:
· look at the range of methods used, especially those that are
innovative
· report findings
· consider the actual and potential applications of such research work.
It is expected that different papers will place different degrees of
emphasis on each of the above.

Organisation: Up to 30 participants. It is hoped that at least half of
the participants will present papers, either individually or jointly. 30
minutes will be allowed for each paper: 20 minutes for the presentation
and 10 minutes for discussion. There will be a maximum of 10 papers.
Overhead and computer projectors will be available for use.

This is a one day seminar, running from 9.30 - 5.00 p.m. Lunch and
refreshments will be provided but accommodation is not included.
Information about local accommodation and relevant telephone numbers can
be sent to participants if needed.

Call for proposals: Intending presenters are invited to send proposals.
These proposals will be reviewed and up to ten accepted. Proposals
should be 100-150 words in length, and submitted either on A4
(double-spaced) or as an attached file (HTML, Word or WordPerfect for
Windows). Send to the address shown overleaf.

The deadline for submissions is:
March 31st

The final programme will be announced and the speakers notified of the
decisions of the reviewers by the middle of April.

Support for postgraduate students: Following BAAL policy to encourage
and support postgraduate student participation in such events, two of
the papers must be given by postgraduate student members of BAAL, and
those students will have their transport (up to 60 pounds each) and
registration fees paid. This financial support is offered to a maximum
of two students.

Registration: Participants will be asked to pay a token registration fee
of £10 each to cover administration costs. Payment of the fee is
required before registration can be confirmed.

Booking a place:
