TITLE Name of course (an individual course, a module or a whole programme?) Name in English AND in the language of instruction (language used in teaching). Example: Introduction to Phonetics / Fonetiikan peruskurssi SHORT DESCRIPTION The aim of this field is to provide the public/audience/user/ with indication that helps him to collate the item described in the form. The object named in TITLE can be anything between: A full study programme e.g. leading to a degree A set of modules leading to qualification A module or teaching units leading to acquisition of credits. LEVEL If the individual course is mentioned, use one of: Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced, Postdoc, Or one of: Basic, Bachelor, Master, PhD, if the study programme is structured this way, Or other, if necessary. If the whole programme is mentioned, the final grade has to be displayed. FACTUAL INFORMATION This section should provide information about the practical aspects of the course. The part DURATION should contain information about the length of the course or programme. Typically, it is assumed that programmes aimed at achieving a certain degree (such as Bachelor, Magister, etc.) will last several years; if the length of study period is not fixed in advance, please fill in the approximate number of years needed for completing the programme plus add information that the length of the period is not fixed in advance. For separate courses on an individual subject, the duration should be typically filled in in number of semesters AND number of months/weeks. In case the course is offered on a regular basis (e.g., every academic year), the section FROM - TO should indicate the months when the course is taught. In case the course is not taught regularly, please fill in the months AND add also the year(s). In both cases, this information is intended to provide the students with information needed for detailed planning. The section HOURS PER WEEK is intended to display the intensity of the teaching by specifying the number of hours to be spent at class for the course. If the number of hours expected to be dedicated by the student to the preparation for the course outside class is unexpectedly high, please specify this as an extra information. The number of ECTS credit points should simply define the qualification a student obtains within the ECTS framework after finishing the course successfully. ECTS Link to ECTS http://europa.eu.int/comm/education/info.html What are ECTS credits? ECTS credits are a numerical value (between 1 and 60) allocated to course units to describe the student workload required to complete them. They reflect the quantity of work each course unit requires in relation to the total quantity of work necessary to complete a full year of academic study at the institution, that is, lectures, practical work, seminars, tutorials, fieldwork, private study - in the library or at home - and examinations or other assessment activities. ECTS is thus based on a full student workload and not limited to contact hours only. ECTS credits are a relative rather than an absolute measure of student workload. They only specify how much of a year's workload a course unit represents at the institution or department allocating the credits. In ECTS, 60 credits represent the workload of an academic year of study and normally 30 credits for a semester and 20 credits for a term. ECTS - How is it calculated? Here is the counting of working hours and credits, according to ECTS system: * working hours per year: a range going from 1680 (40 hours per week X 42 weeks) to 1800 - 2000 - 2200 (maximum amount allowed but to be avoided) * 1 contact hour (i.e. a lesson with teacher in class) = 1,5 study hour (individual work) * 1,5 study hour = 6 pages * 25/30 working hours = 1 credit LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION Language used in teaching. Some study material may still be in other languages (SHOULD THESE BE MENTIONED?) If a course is usually given in a local language, e.g. Dutch, but can be given in English if foreign students attend it, this is indicated in brackets. Example: Dutch (English) PREREQUISITS Describe topics necessary from previous courses for successful study: E.g.: mathematical statistics (basic course), formal grammars, digital signal processing, technical acoustics, basic course in phonetics, elementary programming, skills in C++, etc.... LINKS This section should provide useful Internet links for anyone interested in more information about the course itself as well as about practical matters around. The link to COURSE MATERIAL should point out to specific material(s) not covered by the COURSE DESCRIPTION above. The DEPARTMENT and INSTITUTION should provide basic information about the institutional background; in case the course is offered jointly by more departments/institutions, please provide all the relevant links plus point out which is the principal institution (if any). The web-page of the INSTITUTION should contain a pointer to a site where practical information for students coming from outside the area can be offered relevant practical help with formalities, accommodation etc. The CONTACT person(s) should be typically an e-mail address of the teaching staff responsible for the course.
