The field labels TITLE, SHORT DESCRPTION etc. should be clickable & point to the help information below. This should come up as a bubble.

The buttons down the right are to allow the author to enter more information in that field if s/he wishes. If more information has been supplied the button should appear; otherwise it shouldn't.

TITLE

Give the name in English AND in the language of instruction (language used in teaching)
Example: Introduction to Phonetics / Fonetiikan peruskurssi

The unit can be an individual course, a module or a whole programme - the choice of granularity is left to you.

SHORT DESCRIPTION

Please provide a short description of the course (50 words or so), giving an overview of the course contents.

LEVEL

If an individual module is described, use one of: Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced, Postdoc, Or one of: Basic, Bachelor, Master, PhD, if the study programme is structured this way, Or other, if necessary. If a complete programme is described, give the final qualification e.g. BA, MSc.

FACTUAL INFORMATION

This section should provide information about the practical aspects of the course. DURATION should contain information about the timespan of the unit. Typically, it is assumed that programmes aimed at achieving a certain degree (such as Bachelor, Magister, etc.) will last several years; if the length of the study period is not fixed in advance, please fill in the approximate number of years needed for completing the programme and make a note in the 'more'.

For separate courses within an individual subject, the duration should be typically filled in as number of semesters AND number of months/weeks. When the course is offered on a regular basis (e.g., every academic year), the section FROM - TO should indicate the months when the course is taught. When the course is not taught regularly, use 'more' to clarify. The section HOURS PER WEEK is intended to display the intensity of the teaching by specifying the number of contact hours. If the number of hours expected to be dedicated by the student to the preparation for the course outside class is unexpectedly high, please use 'more' to clarify. The number of ECTS credit points should simply define the qualification a student obtains within the ECTS framework after finishing the course successfully.

ECTS

Link to ECTS http://europa.eu.int/comm/education/info.html

What are ECTS credits? ECTS credits are a numerical value (between 1 and 60) allocated to course units to describe the student workload required to complete them. They reflect the quantity of work each course unit requires in relation to the total quantity of work necessary to complete a full year of academic study at the institution, that is, lectures, practical work, seminars, tutorials, fieldwork, private study - in the library or at home - and examinations or other assessment activities. ECTS is thus based on a full student workload and not limited to contact hours only. ECTS credits are a relative rather than an absolute measure of student workload. They only specify how much of a year's workload a course unit represents at the institution or department allocating the credits.

In ECTS, 60 credits represent the workload of an academic year of study and normally 30 credits for a semester and 20 credits for a term.

ECTS - How is it calculated? Here is the counting of working hours and credits, according to ECTS system:

LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION

This is the language used in teaching the unit.

If a course is usually given in a local language, e.g. Dutch, but can be given in English if foreign students attend it, this is indicated in brackets. Example: Dutch (English)

PREREQUISITES

Describe topics necessary from previous courses for successful study: E.g.: mathematical statistics (basic course), formal grammars, digital signal processing, technical acoustics, basic course in phonetics, elementary programming, skills in C++, etc....

LINKS

This section should provide useful Internet links for anyone interested in more information about the course itself and other practical matters.

The link to COURSE DETAILS should point out to specific material(s) not covered by the COURSE DESCRIPTION above. This will usually comprise material already prepared - you don't have to create new pages.

The DEPARTMENT and INSTITUTION should link to basic information about the institutional background. If the course is offered jointly by more than one department or institution, please provide all the relevant links and point out which is the principal institution (if any). The link for INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS should point to a site where practical information for students coming from outside the area can be offered relevant practical help with formalities, accommodation etc. Most Universities maintain such a site. The CONTACT person(s) should be typically an e-mail address for the course tutor or administrator.
