SPEECH COMMUNICATION SCIENCES &
ADVANCED COMPUTING IN THE HUMANITIES
Socrates Thematic Network Projects, 4th year (Nov. 1, 1999 - Oct. 31, 2000).
Information for the joint JEWELS
meeting at Northern College, September 29 - October 1, 2000
1. Background
The TNP on Speech Communication
Sciences and the TNP on Advanced
Computing in the Humanities (ACO*HUM) have defined specific dissemination
and exploitation goals for their fourth project year.
The TNPs are cooperating on the following common goals:
-
to start the creation of a Joint European Website for Education in Language
and Speech (JEWELS), as a major knowledge source which will facilitate
dissemination of information on all aspects of education and training in
our field (including Non-European Languages). Most of the material has
been collected already in the previous three year project period, and will
now be converted to the most effective and attractive web presentation.
-
to work on policy documents covering both NL & Speech (including Non-European
Languages).
-
to develop a student awareness plan for NL & Speech (including Non-European
Languages).
New working groups have been formed (see below) where members of both networks
are closely cooperating in order to merge results and arrive at specific
dissemination and exploitation results.
A first meeting was held in Prague on March 17-19, 2000. See the
following documents:
The SOCRATES TNPs are also co-operating with ELSNET
in such a way that the SOCRATES TNPs can profit from the substantial technical
web support that the ELSNET III project can offer. This support is
provided under the HLT programme and it realised by the companies ARAX
and VDIVDE. Several meetings
with VDIVDE have taken place. See Gerrit's
JEWELS page for details and reports on these contacts.
Besides ELSNET, also EACL and ISCA will be involved wherever appropriate.

2. Aims of the meeting
At this moment, there is good progress in the implementation of the Jewels
web site, and on August 31 a Jewels delegation will visit VDIVDE-IT in
Berlin to discuss this. If everything goes well we can expect the following
preliminary results:
-
A skeleton Jewels website
|
-
Gerrit Bloothooft will have the permission and possibility to make any
additions/changes in the website the working groups are proposing
|
-
Webdatabase on Courses and Sites
|
-
Webdatabase on Materials and Tools
|
This implies that Working groups are expected to generate their contributions
to the site, and other TNP results, in September. Some contributions will
be text or database entries to be published or put on the web, while others
will be procedures and proposals for improvement, maintenance, etc.
At the Northern College meeting we will evaluate and review the status
of the working group contributions. In addition to website issues, we will
also have to review and finalize TNP results not directly related to the
website. We expect that during the meeting there will be the possibility
to contribute to and to test the Jewels site directly. This implies that
the agenda for the TNP meeting is fairly open, but that we expect a 'working'
attitude from the participants.
3. Practical information on
the Northern College meeting, Sep. 29 - Oct. 1, 2000.

The entire meeting will be held at Northern College, where the participants
will be lodged as well.
